Editing
I have been a practicing freelance editor since 2011 when I retired from a technical writing-editing career with the U.S. Department of the Interior. Recent editing projects include: writing museum labels for the Alaska State Museum for a maritime and transportation exhibit, two 50 + page poetry manuscripts, a 400-page memoir, five full-length novels, a feasibility analysis, and a number of theses, dissertations, newsletters, and articles.
Generally, my rates start at $35.00 per hour but these rates may vary based on the amount and depth of edit needed. Send a few sample pages, an estimate of document length, and your deadline, and I will quote you a rate based on the amount of editing I think you need.
Proofreading
As well as editing in the genres mentioned, I am also a proficient proofreader in the types of documents mentioned above. Rates for proofreading generally start at $30.00 per hour
Research
I have spent many years perfecting online newspaper database searches and exhaustive Web searches for ships, shipwrecks, ship captains, and other historical topics. In the past, I have done research for the National Park Service, the USDA Forest Service, the US Fish & Wildlife Service, the State of Alaska, the US Navy, the Army Corp of Engineers, Santa Barbara Maritime Museum, alaskashipwreck.com, historical societies and museums in Alaska, British Columbia, Yukon Territory, and Washington, and private researchers, including many members of the Puget Sound Maritime Historical Society. Research rates are negotiable based on the project.
